Investing Towards A Sustainable and Clean Economy

The growing social awareness of scare resources and the need for a cleaner economy is heavily influencing government policy, customer preferences and corporate behaviour. There are four major themes in our investment approach to this transition, including low carbon transport, smart energy, agriculture & food industry and natural resource preservation, all of which are supported by a global and diverse portfolio. Join portfolio manager Amanda O'Toole who will be discussing how the transition to a sustainable, clean economy is encouraging multi-decade growth opportunities, generating both positive environmental impact and shareholder returns.

UK Equity Income: The Detail of the Phoenix

2020 was a dark year for UK Equity Income. Few companies were immune to the global pandemic and dividends were cut across the board with investors experiencing a reduction of income and challenging capital returns. The strongest performers in 2020 were growth stocks, many of which are not appropriate for the natural yield-hungry demographic who invest in dividend-paying companies.

The silver lining to 2020 it is the resultant shape of the UK Equity Income segment which is now rich with opportunities for both dividend yield and dividend growth - we are optimistic on both:

Dividend yields continue to offer a substantial premium to that of fixed income or other comparable asset classes.

Dividends have been recalibrated to levels which companies can afford and sustain.

As the world rebounds, we also see scope for significant earnings-led dividend growth, which should provide clients with a measure of protection versus potential inflation. The rebirth of the sector is not without issues, however and the devil is in the detail.

Covid delivered a permanent shock to old ways of doing business and companies which cannot adapt to the new ways of working will not survive, as a result we have cast our net wider than ever before. We have identified some key under-researched and under-appreciated segments of the market – notably in the mid and small cap spectrum - to deliver both reliable dividend yield and dependable dividend growth to our investors.

Goldman Sachs Asset Management

Mithran Sudhir, Executive Director, Client Portfolio Manager on the Fundamental Equity Client Portfolio Management team

Shao-Ping Guan, Managing Director, Head of China Equity Team and Lead Portfolio Manager of GSAM China Equity Strategies

Fund:  Goldman Sachs China A-Share Equity Portfolio

China A -Shares: Too Important To Ignore

China A-Shares are one of the most heavily-under owned asset classes, yet offer some of the most attractive diversification benefits. In addition to this, China A-Shares are dominated by retail investors and are poorly covered by sell-side analysts, thus providing a ripe and fertile ground for alpha generation by active managers. Our locally based Greater China Equity investment team oversees over $7bn in Chinese equities and our GS China A-Shares Equity portfolio employs this team and a fundamental, bottom-up approach to drive consistent alpha generation throughout a cycle.

Goldman Sachs Asset Management

Jasper Sagoo, Executive Director, Senior Emerging Market Debt Portfolio Manager

Fund: Goldman Sachs Asia High Yield Bond Portfolio

Asia High Yield: Opportunities For Investment In A Growing Market

Offering a compelling income & spread pick up versus other FI sectors, low default rates and an improving fundamental and growth outlook, Asia High Yield represents an attractive investment opportunity. Leveraging our experienced team’s bottom-up approach, and the broad resources of a $1.9tn global asset manager, the GS Asia High Yield Strategy is well positioned to access this opportunity. Managed since 2011, our strategy has demonstrated historically consistent outperformance versus the benchmark and strong risk adjusted returns due to our highly selective approach and focus on default avoidance.

UBP ( Union Bancaire Privée)

Fund: UBAM – Positive Impact Emerging Equity

Impact Investing in Emerging Markets

Generating Attractive Financial Returns by Championing the Fixers to the World’s Societal and/or Environmental Problems UBP has a distinctive approach to impact investing: when addressing our investment universe, we map the UN SDGs to our 6 investment themes (3 environmental and 3 societal), which we formulated through our collaboration with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership; each company we research for the portfolio is put through our IMAP system to measure their impact intensity; and our Impact Advisory Board, which is an independent board of sustainability experts, meets every 6 months and provides oversight, guidance and validation of the UBP Impact platform’s process.

Valuation Impacts on Equities of a Higher Inflationary World

Everyday investors are confronted by articles and research that discuss the changing global inflation and interest rate environment. This topic is highly complex, with an extraordinary number of moving parts, and possible conclusions. At Seilern we are not trying to decide which side of the fence to sit on, but to attempt to understand what different macro-economic environments might mean for each of the companies in the Seilern Universe and our funds. In the presentation we will consider the case for both higher and lower long-term interest rates and explore the key factors that could help us to navigate either scenario.
